Natural disasters are unavoidable and can happen anytime, anywhere and to anyone. Therefore, disaster mitigation efforts must be carried out by all parties, including the community. The people of Harkatjaya Village, a village located in a disaster-prone area, have made disaster mitigation efforts through disaster management simulations. Disaster management simulation is a form of disaster management training conducted by the community of Harkatjaya Village. The simulation aims to increase community awareness of disaster hazards, improve community skills and knowledge in dealing with disasters, and prepare the community to deal with disasters effectively.
In this simulation, the community of Harkatjaya Village was divided into several groups, each with different tasks and roles in disaster management. These groups were formed according to the types of disasters that might occur in the village, such as landslides, earthquakes, and especially flash floods which are the biggest threat to both villages.
The simulation participants, consisting of the community of RW 07&08 and the Harkatjaya Village government, were trained to perform appropriate actions in disaster situations, such as providing first aid to victims, rescuing people trapped in collapsed buildings, or organising the evacuation of residents to a safe place. In addition, the people of Harkatjaya Village were also trained to use equipment needed in disaster management, such as communication tools and first aid kits.
In addition to the training, the Harkatjaya Village community was also involved in a direct disaster management simulation because at the time of the simulation there was heavy rain and there were several participants who needed help due to slipping and minor injuries so that the community consciously performed and practised the actions that had been previously trained. The results of this simulation were very positive. The Harkatjaya Village community is more prepared and capable in dealing with disasters and is able to improve coordination and cooperation between groups in dealing with disasters.
