Nanggung Sub-district in Bogor Regency is one of 26 sub-districts in Bogor Regency, West Java, categorised as flood and landslide prone areas. Landslides, flash floods, and land movements hit the vulnerable areas in Bogor Regency every year. These threats and disasters become an annual cycle that occurs almost every February to March in their area. One of YSI's mandates for education as part of mitigation and preparedness efforts needs to be continuously improved by the community to face these threats. The education was carried out by organising a flood and landslide emergency response simulation given to students of SDN Banar 02 in Nanggung sub-district.
SDN Banar 02 is one of the schools located in a flood and landslide-prone location because it is directly adjacent to the Cisahan river where every time the water discharge increases, flooding will occur. The simulation targeting 180 children and 9 school teachers was divided into 2 stages, namely the preparation, and the alert stage. In the preparation stage, teachers and students were taught to share roles, understand the stages in early warning efforts to the community. This was also practised as part of the evacuation scenario.
In the second stage, simulations were conducted for alert scenarios 3 to 1. Through simulation and role play by children and teachers, YSI was able to observe and evaluate the extent of their knowledge and capacity in threat knowledge. The results of this observation are then used as a basis for preparing the next stage of the simulation. An active role was also shown by parents who initially only intended to pick up their children. They were willing to get involved and respond to each stage of the simulation. In addition, one of the parents said that this activity was an extraordinary thing because it was the first time they got it through direct practice not only through theory, or information leaflets.
Ending the simulation activity, Alvianto Roeseno as Area Manager said "Children and school teachers are equipped with knowledge of flood and landslide threats in their area, so that they are able to secure themselves, evacuate independently and provide assistance to others. The role of teachers in this simulation activity is quite crucial as a disaster preparedness team at school. It is hoped that learning based on this simulation experience can become inherent knowledge for students and teachers at SDN Banar 02 and there is a transmission of knowledge to other children in their neighbourhood or playmates," he concluded.
