Yayasan SHEEP Indonesia (YSI), together with the village midwife, conducted health check-ups and nutrition education for older people in Pematang Durian Village, Sekerak Subdistrict, Aceh Tamiang. The activity was part of YSI’s post-flood community assistance, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups and their health and nutritional needs.

Located near the Tamiang River, Pematang Durian Village faces various health risks when heavy rainfall causes the river to overflow. Diseases such as diarrhea, acute respiratory infections, and skin diseases can emerge in such conditions. Through this activity, YSI also promoted the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases, which require attention during the post-disaster recovery process.

YSI Project Manager, Evi Novita, explained that the post-disaster situation provided an opportunity to reassess community health and food security. This effort included health check-ups for older people, covering measurements of height, weight, and upper arm circumference, as well as blood sugar, cholesterol, and uric acid tests.

The activity involved Posyandu cadres from Pematang Durian Village and local health workers. The results of the health check-ups were used as a basis for providing nutrition education tailored to each participant’s health condition.

The nutrition education focused on daily eating habits. Older people with high blood sugar levels were advised to reduce their sugar intake. Participants with high cholesterol and uric acid levels received information about foods that should be limited and healthier dietary choices.

Through this activity, older people were expected to better understand their health conditions and apply balanced eating habits in their daily lives. YSI also distributed nutrition packages as additional support for participating older people.

Pematang Durian Village Head, Abdul Rahman, emphasized that the recovery process requires community resilience and self-reliance. He explained that assistance can support recovery, while knowledge and the ability to maintain good health need to be continuously applied in everyday life.
