On October 9-15, 2023, SHEEP Indonesia Foundation (YSI) represented by 3 staffs attended the Summit of DRR month commemoration in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi. In the activity with the theme 'Improving coordination and quality of disaster risk reduction through sustainable resilience', YSI participated by providing informative educational media related to disaster. The information was packaged through comics, snakes and ladders, monopoly and quartet games. In the facilitation of education and information media, YSI emphasized that in a disaster there are 3 important phases that must be known emergency response, reconstruction rehabilitation, and disaster risk reduction to build resilience and long-term capacity which is then complemented by anticipatory action.
This form of education is made by YSI for child beneficiaries to make it easier to understand with children's language and understanding. They need to be involved in the process of risk reduction and mitigation efforts, one of which is by providing and providing knowledge about disasters, potential and capacity, preparedness and reducing risks so that they are better prepared and more resilient in facing disaster threats.
The children who came to the ToGETHER Consortium exhibition booth where one of the members is YSI, seemed very enthusiastic about the learning media presented by YSI. This educational media uses creative methods and is based on the approach that children like to play and learn. From experience so far this method has proven to be an effective way to introduce disasters and preparedness efforts to children. Not only do they learn happily, but they also take home valuable knowledge about how to prepare for disaster threats and can invite other children or families to play and learn about the material presented.
In addition to bringing educational media, YSI representatives also attended with the ToGETHER Consortium to voice humanitarian action with a localization approach. The ToGETHER Consortium in Indonesia consists of 5 local organizations (PKPA, YSI, LPSDM, YPAL & YPM) supported by Caritas Germany and BNPB to present a talk show entitled "Equal Partnership for Localization of Humanitarian Action in Indonesia" on 11 October 2023. In addition, the ToGETHER Consortium also shared lessons learned about the importance of supporting local initiatives originating from local communities, especially in humanitarian or disaster action.
On this occasion, YSI shared some good practices related to localization in disaster response in Cianjur Regency. These good practices are documented in a book entitled "Suara dari Kampung" which tells how local communities can initiate and coordinate post-earthquake recovery efforts in Cianjur Regency through their key role in distributing aid and repairing houses with earthquake-friendly retrofitting technology. The good practices documented in the book are a compilation of lessons learned from the implementation of the ToGETHER program by 5 partner institutions in Indonesia. It is hoped that these learning stories can be a source of inspiration, information and also knowledge for parties including humanitarian workers and the community in supporting the localization of humanitarian action in Indonesia.
