Internship at Yayasan SHEEP Indonesia (YSI) has been one of the most memorable experiences during my academic journey; as a student of Urban and Regional Planning (URP), I had the opportunity to apply the theories learned on campus into a real context, especially in disaster management and climate change adaptation. Involvement in various projects at YSI also provided new insights into how regional planning can play an important role in addressing global challenges.
Educational Content Processing: Disaster Management and PWK
One of my responsibilities during my internship at YSI is to create educational content scripts that connect the science of PWK with disaster management; this content is part of the duties and functions of the information and communication field at YSI to provide education to the public in order to increase public awareness about the importance of disaster preparation. I learned that PWK science can play a strategic role in disaster mitigation through wise spatial arrangements, such as zoning that takes into account disaster potential and environmentally friendly land management.
In the content development process, I integrated PWK theory with concrete steps that YSI has taken in the field. This not only deepened my understanding of PWK, but also showed me the real impact of good planning in protecting communities from disaster risks. Working with YSI's experienced team also enriched the process, as I received a lot of feedback and guidance that made the content more informative and relevant.
Contributing to a Climate Change Adaptation Project in Bandung Regency
In addition to creating educational content, I was also involved in a climate change adaptation project in Bandung Regency. My job was to analyze and review the database collected by the field team from Bandung and integrate it with secondary data from relevant sources. Although I did not go directly to the field, I learned a lot about the climate conditions in Bandung Regency and the challenges faced by the local community.
To illustrate, the project aims to increase community resilience to climate change, especially in terms of risk mitigation. The data survey I conducted helped in identifying vulnerable spots in Bandung District and provided a rationale for formulating effective adaptation strategies. I found it very challenging to integrate information from various sources and compile it into an in-depth and accurate analysis.
In this project, I conducted a disaster analysis and disaster assessment, as well as a climate change analysis and climate change assessment generated from available data. This information was then mapped, resulting in disaster mitigation plans and climate change adaptation strategies for the future. By identifying areas that are vulnerable to disasters and climate change impacts, I was able to develop strategies to improve community and environmental resilience in Bandung Regency.
This process was one of the most valuable experiences during my internship. I learned how to combine regional planning science with risk analysis to come up with sustainable solutions. The mitigation and adaptation plan aims to prepare the community to face the increasing risk of disasters and climate change, so that they can live more safely and resiliently.
Comfortable and Interactive Working Atmosphere
One of the most memorable things during my internship at SHEEP Indonesia Foundation is the comfortable and interactive working atmosphere. The YSI office is filled with people who are very open and ready to discuss. I felt very supported in every task assigned, and my ideas or inputs always received serious attention from the team.
This positive work environment encourages me to be more proactive and eager to give my best contribution. I feel like I'm in the right place to grow, both academically and professionally. Collaborating with experienced colleagues has been a very valuable experience, as well as expanding my network in my field.
Overall, the internship at SHEEP Indonesia Foundation was an enriching experience and opened my horizons significantly. I feel very lucky to have had this opportunity, and I am sure that all the lessons learned during my internship will be valuable in my future career, especially in the field of urban and regional planning that focuses on sustainability and climate change issues. This experience has not only shaped me as a professional, but also as an individual who is more aware of the importance of contributing to the environment and supporting local communities.
