Human Resources (HR) play a crucial role in the mission and activities of Yayasan SHEEP Indonesia (YSI). Being a part of YSI is not just about working; it involves being an agent of change and carrying out a mandate to transform values that strengthen marginalized communities. This value transformation is implemented at YSI through capacity building with the theme "Strengthening YSI HR Spirit: Caring and Professional." The event, held on Thursday, September 24, 2024, involved all YSI staff both in person and online. "Caring and Professional" is the motto for all YSI staff to build a value-based organizational culture.
In his presentation, YSI Director Andreas Subiyono emphasized that YSI's existence is not merely about managing projects but is driven by the organization's vision, mission, and values. YSI was founded on an idealistic spirit, maintained through the application of three main organizational components: spirit (vision, mission, values, principles), resources (HR, finance, assets, image), and action (programs and projects). These components complement each other and form the foundation of the organization's sustainability.
The event also underscored the importance of the spirit in work. "The spirit resource is the energy that drives action and praxis" Andreas explained. Without the spirit, the HR and program components would not function optimally. Therefore, YSI strives to balance the values upheld with practical fieldwork to ensure the organization remains strong and relevant to contemporary challenges.
Additionally, Andreas encouraged YSI’s HR to explore their work motivations. At the end of the motivational sharing session, he discussed the evolution of work motivations from prehistoric times to the 21st century, linking motivation to the importance of total dedication in work, where success is measured not only by quantitative outcomes but also by creativity and time spent. Here, YSI staff came to understand that "caring" is a priority in their work, forming part of the motivation that must be maintained by each HR member. The foundation of personal values is then related to YSI's values, which must consistently be strengthened in program implementation. Professionalism is applied before work begins, and every HR member is expected to embody "caring," which leads to love and empathy, as emphasized by Andreas, underscoring the importance of acceptance and respect for one another before discussing targets and skills.
To conclude the event, staff were also invited to participate in a reflection session on how YSI's values, such as equality, integrity, simplicity, and inclusiveness, are applied in everyday life. During group discussions, participants were asked to put these values into practice by creating short films that hone teamwork and cross-commission collaboration to interpret and translate the meaning of the values.
This activity is a concrete step by YSI to build an organizational culture that not only focuses on results but also appreciates the processes and underlying values. Closing the event, Wuri Lukitasari, a staff member in YSI’s HR department, stated, “With a strong spirit and commitment to professionalism, YSI hopes to continue playing a role in creating significant social change both within the organization and in assisting communities."
