Rethinking the Politics of the Energy Transition

On 5 February 2026, Leadership for Change (LFC) collaborated with two BLFC scholars, Trisna Harahap and Hema Malini Situmorang, to hold a CADASH session titled “Geothermal: Renewable Disaster? Unpacking the Politics of Energy Transition in Indonesia.”

The discussion encouraged participants to take a more critical look at Indonesia’s energy transition agenda, particularly geothermal energy development. Although geothermal energy is promoted as a clean energy source, its development also raises questions about social and ecological impacts, as well as power relations within development processes.

Drawing on the two scholars’ research on natural resource issues, participants were invited to understand that the energy transition is not only about technology and emissions targets. It also involves social justice, public policy, and ensuring that the interests of affected communities are represented.
