Strengthening Climate Justice Awareness and Child Rights Protection through School Campaigns and Teacher Discussions

Yayasan SHEEP Indonesia, through its Climate Justice for Children’s Protection Program (KIPHA), organized a discussion with the school committee and teachers at SD Sanjaya Tritis. The activity was part of the program’s effort to strengthen climate change literacy within the school environment and to promote the protection of children’s rights through participatory and context-based education.

The discussion was attended by members of the school committee and teachers of SD Sanjaya Tritis. The meeting was initiated by the school to strengthen cooperation between the school and the committee, which had recently faced communication and coordination challenges in supporting children’s education. On this occasion, the school also introduced the YSI team as a partner supporting learning processes and strengthening climate change awareness related to climate justice and the fulfillment of children’s rights.

During the discussion, changes in the school committee’s management were presented as an effort to bring new ideas and approaches to strengthening partnerships between the school and parents. The meeting resulted in several agreements, including the organization of regular monthly meetings, the appointment of a school committee representative to serve as a communication liaison between the school and the committee, and the preparation of a joint activity plan for the next semester.

The YSI team facilitated an introduction to the concept of climate justice, the impacts of climate change on children’s lives, and the importance of integrating climate and child rights issues into teaching and learning activities as well as school programs. This material is in line with KIPHA program activities, which include teacher discussions, sharing of good educational practices, development of learning materials, and integration of climate justice issues into school activities.

The presence of the YSI team was warmly welcomed by the school committee. The KIPHA program was considered relevant to the realities faced by families and communities, particularly regarding the impacts of climate change on children’s health, education, and well-being. The school committee expressed its support for participating in KIPHA activities at SD Sanjaya Tritis and for strengthening a learning environment that is safe, inclusive, and responsive to climate change issues.

One of the committee members also expressed willingness to serve as a liaison between the school, YSI, and other stakeholders who may support the development of educational and climate awareness activities at the school.

As a follow-up, the school and YSI are planning a water conservation tree-planting activity in Turgo involving SD Sanjaya students, which will be carried out near the beginning of the rainy season, as well as a compost-bin decoration competition aimed at encouraging the processing of organic food waste at school. A representative from YSI stated at the end of the activity that, “The synergy between schools, parents, and YSI will have a significant impact in increasing children’s awareness of climate justice, so that they can ultimately voice their rights to grow and develop in a clean and healthy environment.”
