The Disaster Simulation and Evacuation Route and Assembly Point Trial took place on Friday in Timbulsloko Hamlet, Timbulsloko Village. This activity was facilitated by SHEEP Indonesia Foundation in collaboration with the Timbulsloko Village Disaster Preparedness Team (TSBD) as an effort to enhance community preparedness in facing disasters such as high tidal floods and strong winds.
The simulation involved not only the TSBD but also the youth organization Karang Taruna, village midwives, and residents from various backgrounds. All participants were guided to understand evacuation routes, identify assembly points, and set evacuation priorities during emergencies.
“The primary goal of this simulation is to ensure that the community knows what to do when tidal floods and strong winds occur. They must know where to go, who to assist first, and how to conduct a safe and quick evacuation,” explained Evi Novita, the Facilitator.
One notable aspect of this activity was the residents’ spontaneous collaboration, with each person taking on roles without needing much direction. Village midwives stood by with medical equipment, Karang Taruna youth visited the homes of elderly residents and persons with disabilities to assist with evacuation, while other groups proceeded directly to the designated assembly points.
This simulation is part of a series of educational programs and community capacity-building initiatives on disaster risk under the “AMAN” Program in Demak. It is hoped that by strengthening community understanding of disaster management, vulnerability can be reduced, and the village’s resilience in facing disasters can be increased.
