For the people of Katurei Village, mangrove crabs (Scylla serrata) are one of their main sources of livelihood; almost half of them depend on crab farming including the OMB Sipaalei ojuk group. However, crab farming is not without obstacles and is often faced with various challenges; one of the obstacles that often occurs is the lack of enlargement houses so that groups are often unable to meet consumption needs and market demand. For information, the enlargement house that has been used so far is still a plastic box modified so that it can become a crab enlargement container. The plastic boxes must be purchased in Padang City (outside the island). This is costly especially if the demand for crabs increases and requires many plastic boxes.
Since attending the field school with SHEEP Indonesia Foundation (YSI), OMB Sipaalei ojuk managed to find a new method that is more effective and able to increase the quality and quantity of Crab commodity production. The new method is the use of bamboo as a crab box. Bamboo was chosen due to its abundant availability, local material in coastal areas and environmentally friendly nature. "The plastic boxes that we usually use are in short supply and are not able to make the crabs grow bigger," said Risman, Siberut Area Manager. "We are very happy with the discovery of bamboo crab boxes. Apparently, the crabs are more comfortable living in bamboo boxes and the quality is better, besides the more moss on the walls of the bamboo also spoils the crabs because their food becomes more abundant."
The use of bamboo boxes has been proven to increase crab production and quality. Risman explained that before innovating using bamboo boxes, his group could only produce 13 to 14 kilograms of crabs per harvest. However, after using bamboo boxes, their production increased by more than 200% to 30 to 40 kilograms per harvest. "Crabs raised in bamboo boxes are healthier and the meat is denser," Risman continued. "This makes the selling price of our crabs higher." The success of the Crab Farming Field School in Katurei Village attracted the attention of other communities in the village. Many want to replicate the programme in their home cages.
Continuing what Risman said, the new bamboo box method created is not only able to increase production but also protect the environment "By using a more environmentally friendly and sustainable cultivation method, the community can increase the production and quality of crabs, while preserving nature".
