On Wednesday, 31/01/24, a discussion on the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for Early Warning System was held in Rancaekek Sub-district. The event was attended by 14 participants consisting of stakeholder and community representatives from three villages, namely Rancaekek Wetan, Rancaekek Kencana, and Bojongloa. The event aimed to recognise the risks, threats and vulnerabilities in each village and develop anticipatory action steps to reduce the impact.
The discussion began with the presentation of risks, threats, and vulnerabilities in each village. The presentation was delivered by the hall's guard team consisting of Kang Riki, Kang Awen, and Kang Sola. Based on the results of the presentation of each village, there are several potential risks, threats, and vulnerabilities such as floods, tornadoes, and droughts. Based on the classification of threats, participants were then divided into groups to discuss in more detail.
The discussion process took place enthusiastically, smoothly, and participants were actively involved as evidenced by several participants discussing topics such as what causes and triggers and what events are signs of floods, tornadoes and droughts. The results of this discussion are then presented in the form of presentations by each group, then will be criticised and added by other groups. These results will later become the basis and be developed into a systematic SOP and the formation of an early warning team.
At the end of the discussion, the early warning team for Rancaekek Sub-district was selected. Kang Adi, a community representative from among the disaster-affected farmers/ranchers, was elected as the chairman. The team will play a key role in observing, analysing and disseminating information related to disasters, especially in Rancaekek Sub-district and their impact on villages in the region. As the elected chairman, Kang Adi gave his appreciation and expressed his readiness to work together with Yayasan SHEEP Indonesia (YSI) and Save the Children (STC) in an effort to increase community capacity through actions to anticipate the impacts of climate change.
At the end of the activity, Kang Adi as the elected chairman expressed his appreciation to SHEEP Indonesia Foundation and Save the Children. "We appreciate the presence of YSI and STC as institutions outside the government that participate in improving the ability of the community related to early warning systems and adaptation to climate change, especially in Rancaekek District. We hope that this activity continues to bring positive benefits to the safety and preparedness of the local community against potential disasters" he concluded.
