A number of representatives from Community Based Organisations (CSOs) from partner villages in the Sipora region attended a training on 6-7 February 2024 to build capacity and document experiences in pig farm management in the Siberut region, and to capitalise on the momentum of Musrenbangdes preparation. The activity, which aimed to introduce and increase understanding of pig farming and other agricultural integration, was held at the Tiop hamlet hall in Katurei village. Pig manure can be processed as an added value and used as fertiliser, which supports sustainable environmental sustainability.
Participants were introduced to cage and animal waste management techniques on the first day of the activity. The material was delivered by OMB Katurei representative Simatoro, who provided an in-depth understanding of the selection of superior puppies, pest control and fermented feed production. Active discussion and question and answer sessions enriched the understanding of the participants. They also shared their knowledge on learning banana and taro commodities. The second day of activities also focused on improving communication skills and the courage to express opinions in public. Participants were invited to hone these skills through a simulation of the Village Development Plan Consultation (Musrenbangdes) to explore community aspirations and formulate village development plans.
The activity was attended by 26 participants representing OMB members. The participants gained sufficient knowledge and skills in pig farming, as well as an increased sense of courage and criticality in expressing opinions. As a follow-up, they will share the learning outcomes with other OMB members, prepare for the construction of pig houses, and establish a medium for learning and sharing information through WhatsApp groups. All these steps are expected to improve the independence and quality of life of farmers in the Sipora and Siberut regions.
