5th Situation Report West Sumatra Earth Quake − September 30, 2009 Date of Report : October 9, 2009

Eight days post the earthquake, the District Disaster Response Agency (Satkorlak) of Padang Pariaman recorded 341 dead tolls, 519 people with serious injury, and 529 people with minor injury. Meanwhile, 66.019 houses are heavily damaged, 13.226 with medium damage and 3.503 houses are lightly damage. There are about 65 either government or non-government organizations registered at Satkorlak Padang Pariaman, which implement relief response, including SHEEP. Up to now, many organizations who implement mobile clinic do not establish a post in Padang Pariaman. Most organizations settle in Padang City. They usually mobile to Padang Pariaman in the morning and travel back to Padang in the evening. Although many mobile clinics operated, including Government Health Center (PusKesMas), there are still many areas got lack of support since Padang Pariaman has huge coverage area.
On Wednesday, October 7, 2009, SHEEP provided health service in Korong Paingan-Nagari Kuranji Hilir part of Sungai Limau Sub District. Korong Paingan has six sub villages. During health service, SHEEP served 125 patients. Most patients were suffering Upper Respiratory Infection/URI [51 people] and Myalgia [22 people]. Most people in Korong Paingan are living from farming, coconut plantation, and traditional trading in market, so in terms of economic matters, people can continue their work for living since the earthquake does not break their work equipment.

On October 8 2009, The Health Team of SHEEP provided health service in Korong Toboh - Nagari Sikucur, part of Limo Koto Kampuang Dalam. Korong Toboh is occupied by 392 families or about 1,100 people. Korong Toboh is located in hills area with its water spring which never stops flowing. The water still flows after the earthquake and this makes people get sufficient clean water for their daily needs. There is a village rule, that people are not allow to build wells here. People only allow using the water spring to meet their water needs. This rule was made to protect the availability of clean water for people who are living in lower area. Wali Nagari (Village Leader) is very dominant in decision-making. The decision that already made by people meeting can be beaten by his decision. This circumstance often bothers the process of logistic and health service distribution. There are one school, one Islamic Boarding School (Pesantren), 11 mosques, and 292 houses are affected by the earthquake. Several organizations have intervened in providing logistic and health service support. Besides, CRS plans to provide shelters. According to vice village leader, logistic supply for people in this village is sufficient until next week.
Most of people in Korong Toboh Manggarai are living as farmers, palm coconut and cocoa farmers. Unfortunately, some of irrigation flows are blocked by land after the landslide, post the earthquake. Due to its hills, some area can be only reached by motorbike or walking. During health service there, SHEEP served 86 patients with various diseases like: Myalgia [22 people], URI [17 people], minor injury [11 people], and two patients were identified psychosomatic.
Beside mobile clinic, SHEEP also provided health service in its post [home-based clinic]. From two days of services, SHEEP served 4 patients on Wednesday and 42 patients on Thursday. Most patients were suffering URI [19 people], Anemia [8 people], Dermatitis [6 people] and others. URI is the most common disease since many people sleep outside and dustier during dry season. People also suffer various skin disease. Personal hygiene became main factor, which affect people health.
Nine days port the earthquake, people start to build temporary shelter by themselves using left material of their collapse or damage houses. However, people seem not working together, but they do it with their own family. In terms of prevention of infection, the government has not applied Anti Tetanus Vaccination for people who have started cleaning up the ruin and building temporary shelters, which is very vulnerable to get injured and trigger infections.
