1st Situation Report West Sumatra Earth Quake − September 30, 2009

    7.6 Richter Scale of Tectonic earthquakes strikes West Sumatra on September 30, 2009 at 05.16 p.m. The quake epicenter was at 57 km Southwest of Pariaman with 71 Km depth. The earthquake causes massive infrastructure damage, injury and death. Last information update tells other 6.8 Richter scale earthquakes also strikes Jambi and Bengkulu with 36 Km depth, on October 1st 2009 at 8.39 a.m. Up to now, there is no fix data on victims and damage toward the earthquake in ambi and Bengkulu.

    Meanwhile, National Disaster Response Agency (BNPB) recorded 220 dead tolls, which spread out in Padang city [144 people], Padang Pariaman District [62 people], and Pariaman City [14 people]. This amount may increase as still many people are not evacuated yet from the ruin of houses and other buildings. The shake of quake could be felt from Malaysia and Singapore. Beside damages various building, such as hotels, government offices, and people residences, the quake also causes landslides in several points which block some roads in West Sumatra.
    Post earthquake, most people stay outside to anticipate additional quakes, while in the evening people whose damage houses prefer stay either in mosques, their relatives, neighbors or even install tent at open area.

    The government has coordinated various responses and determines two months of Emergency Responses. Government has sent logistic support and health team, including surgeons to the disaster prone. National Search and Rescue Team has mobilized team to be deployed to West Sumatra for searching and rescuing the victims. Some International NGOs which responses are: CRS, Oxfam, Mer-C, HOPE Worldwide, Mercy Malaysia, Mercy Corps, Caritas, IMC, Global Medic, and World Vision International. Up to now, victims searching and evacuation are still going.
    Urgent needs post earthquake is medical support for treating physical trauma while IDPs need tents for temporary shelter, logistic support like food, clean water and blanket. After about a week or more post the disaster, health service is needed to help IDPs who are usually become more vulnerable of common diseases.
