A 5.9 Richer-scale tectonic earthquake with 8.24 degrees south latitude and 110.43 degrees east longitude, hit Yogyakarta and Central Java Provinces on May 27, 2006 at 05.54 West Indonesian Time (WIB). According to Board of Meteorology and Geo-physic (BMG), the epicenter of the earthquake is 38 kilometers south-west Yogyakarta city, It is a shallow tectonic earthquake, located in 17.1 kilometers down from the surface. About 6,000 people died and 15,000 injured (minor and major). This event has made people in total panic. The biggest losses took place in Bantul District because this area is very close to the epicenter.
