Strengthening Survivor Community Post Earthquake in Yogyakarta

Video  |  Photo

Eight months after the earthquake, the recovery process continued, with many survivors still not having proper homes to live in. Survivors who were poor to begin with (prior to earthquake) and who were poor as a result of the earthquake were still facing the critical challenge of meeting their daily needs. The latter included daily consumption of food, which became increasingly taxing on family income as the price of key food commodity (rice) continued to rise. Food expenditure (rice) was already putting strains on people’s ability to allocate household financial resources (income) on other necessary needs such as children’s education and family health. In this prevailing context, SHEEP developed the following strategies to deal with the issues.

1Community organizing
2 Capacity strengthening
3 Awareness raising
4 Promotion of independent creative learning outside of schools
